The resume is your first date

In Very Short:

Your shidduch resume is more than a list of facts—it’s your first impression.
Before anyone meets you, they’ll likely meet your resume. This guide will help you think of it not just as paperwork, but as a meaningful opportunity to communicate who you are and what you’re looking for.

Some people use a resume purely as a fact sheet. They don’t believe that it is possible to describe a person properly on a piece of paper. That may have some truth to it. Their view is that if someone would like to know more, they can reach out.

The premise of this article is that it’s best to take advantage of a resume to communicate about yourself. The reality these days is that almost everyone uses resumes for shidduchim, and people are influenced by them. It is therefore important to make sure that yours is as effective as possible.

It is helpful to think of your resume as your first date, as it is the first opportunity for people to “meet” you. So, ask yourself, what would you like people to know about you?

Shape the First Impression

Moreover, your resume is likely to be the very first impression a lot of people will have of you. It is well known that first impressions have a significant effect. It makes sense to do what you can to ensure that the first impression someone has of you is a positive one. Not only that, but until you actually meet someone on a date, the resume is the main point of reference they have of you.

Often, people – shadchanim, parents, potential dates – will revert back to the resume to remind themselves about you, and what you put down is your chance to shape how they will view you. Often, people complain that they are misunderstood or misjudged during shidduchim. Your resume is an opportunity to shape the narrative and present your own version of who you are.

It is helpful to think of your resume as your first date, as it is the first opportunity for people to “meet” you. So, ask yourself, what would you like people to know about you? More importantly, what impression would you like the reader to have of you? You can’t force people to accept your version of yourself, but you can provide them with a compelling reason to do so.

Make It Personal

It’s best to view a resume as more than merely a sheet of basic stats and contact details, but a vital communication tool. Practically speaking, make sure that your resume says something meaningful about you, not just the standard words that get used over and over again. Share information that allows your unique personality to shine through and that allows the reader to get a real sense of who you are.

Put thought into your resume. Ask others what they think are your best qualities, and include their ideas as well. Think of something interesting that you can share about yourself that would speak to the right person for you. Yes, being specific can make your resume less attractive to some, but it is more important that you focus on being attractive to the right kind of person.

It isn’t necessary to make the resume all fancy, but do make sure that it’s laid out well, is free of typographical errors, and the information is both accurate and current. It would be a shame if someone felt you weren’t serious about dating because your resume is poorly written.

Use a Quality Photo

Likewise, ensure that your photo is worthy of the important task at hand. If you are going to share a photo, it’s essential that it be a good one. No one else should be in the photo, it should be of professional quality, and it should capture you at your best.
